Why doesn't God talk to me?

When I was a Christian I never had a personal experience with God either, and I found it strange that other people claimed to have them. I think most of the people who claim they've had such an experience are lying, deluded, or hallucinating. When I look back at my time as a Christian I remember never really feeling any kind of spiritual connection to God. I tried to believe in him as much as possible, but that was just a way of me tricking myself into still being a Christian.
